Customer service - They must greet the customers, respond to there questions and requests a courteous and helpful way.
Stocking - They must receive, restock, and "condition" the shelves with non-food merchandise, such as non-prescription medications, cosmetics, shampoo, and similar items which typically come placed in plastic totes weighing as much 45 lbs. each (average weigh is 20 lbs.). Totes are lifted from floor level to as high as 6'2" above floor level. The clerk stacks the totes in the designated storage area, occasionally climbing a ladder with totes, when stocking or removing merchandise. When a new shipment arrives, the clerk reads and verifies the invoices by counting the individual items to confirm the order. They also build special displays where items are stacked in other then their normal location.
Operate registers - They may work at a cosmetic counter and be required to operate a register and transact sales properly or operate the computer in the video department.
Work location - They work throughout their department and the back of the store and must stand or walk for up to 4 hours at a time, often lifting, bending, turning, twisting, and reaching. Due to the nature of the products handled, they will be exposed to chemically based scents.
The Drug/GM Clerk is also responsible for the following ADDITIONAL DUTIES which may become ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS depending on the particular store, availability of personnel, time of day, etc.: Unloading totes from truck and using manual pallet jack to unload pallets of totes; manually attaching price labels with labeling machine; checking prices which requires knowing the locations of all items; climbing a step ladder as high as 10 ft. above floor level to change signs; sweeping and mopping; taking trash to the dumpster; and operating the box baler (if at least 18 years old); conducting inventory.
